About the day
The first chapters of the Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic, Neijing Suwen chapters 1 and 2, introduce the classical Chinese views on health, longevity and fertility. They include the 7 and 8 year cycles of fertility for men and women, and discuss the ways to avoid ill health by adapting life to the rhythms of the four seasons. The cyclical progress of the year informs the movements of the five elements/phases and their association with the internal organs. These two chapters provide the foundation of yang sheng, nourishing life, practices and the basis of zang fu theory.

In the morning we will look in detail at the 7 and 8 year cycles of fertility from Suwen chapter 1, paying close attention to the role of the Kidney qi, Ren mai and Chong mai for women, and Kidney qi, Liver qi and the participation of Dai mai for men.

In the afternoon we will examine the section of Suwen chapter 2 which discusses the movement and quality of qi throughout the four seasons, looking closely at the relationship to the functions and pathologies of the zangfu, which includes internal cold, intermittent fevers, diarrhoea, and impotence.
